Effectiveness of Community Cigarettes on smoking

How does the Effectiveness of Community Cigarettes Program relate to smoking cessation efforts in other countries? There have been some very encouraging recent developments in Australia, particularly in the area of smoking prevalence and health problems stemming from tobacco use. In fact, it has been reported that while total smoking prevalence has declined slightly over the last decade, there are many regions of the country where smoking prevalence has declined more or less consistently over the same time period.

It is interesting to note that while both sexes smoke at similar levels in each of these regions, there are some differences in the pattern of decline by sex for some locations and for some age groups.
It is not known if the declining smoking rates in the country are related to community interventions, such as the program discussed above, or specific changes in public awareness and behavior. Many of these changes have been associated with campaigns and information dissemination efforts promoted by local government and health officials. For example, in September of last year, Australia announced the creation of a “STOP smoking campaign” which included the running of television advertisements.

These ads were well designed and very visible. However, they did little to increase the overall smoking prevalence in the population, despite the large and well-publicized effort. The decline in smoking prevalence in this country over the last decade has been similar to that of many other developed countries with a high level of societal smoking, including France, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom.
What about the Effectiveness of Community Cigarettes? Many researchers who have studied the smoking prevalence in various communities around the world, as well as smokers in Australia, have found that the puffing prevalence varies widely within different communities.


For example, it has been found that in a rural community in Northern Australia that a higher percentage of males smoked compared to females, while a high percentage of females smoked in a Southern Australian community and a low percentage of males smoked in a Perth regional community. Similarly, it was found that there are strong differences in the amount of puffing prevalence by education, income and social class.
An interesting new research project by the University of Glasgow has discovered that a community program, which combines motivation, support and medication to help smokers kick the habit, is as effective as a nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT).

This means that people who do not smoke can use the NRT to help them quit the habit on a longer term basis. The Glasgow research echoes the findings of other researchers who have used NRT to help smokers break the addiction. In addition, it supports the view that one of the most cost-effective smoking cessation programs is the local community program.

Cigarette is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States.1–3 Although smoking rates have continued to decline since 1965, 2012 National Health Interview Survey data indicate that 18% of the adult population currently smokes.4 Continued efforts to promote smoking cessation are essential for helping the nation meet the 2020 health objective to reduce the prevalence of cigarette smoking among adults to 12%.

Several behavioral and pharmacologic interventions for smoking cessation have been shown to be efficacious.6 As a result, the US Department of Health and Human Services Clinical Practice Guideline recommends that smokers be advised to use a combination of medication and behavioral treatment of cessation.6 However, 2010 National Health Survey data indicate that evidence-based smoking cessation approaches are underused and not included in the majority (68.3%) of past year quit attempts.7 Behavioral interventions, including individual counseling,

A range of tobacco prevention and control activities have resulted in the significant decline in smoking behaviors over the past 3 decades. The most wide-reaching and accessible methods used have been mass media smoking cessation campaigns via television, radio, print ads, and billboards.8,9

 Although these campaigns are effective for reducing smoking prevalence at the population level, their effectiveness at the individual level is unclear.8–10 At the individual level, tobacco quit lines are highly accessible and effective, with estimated 6-month abstinence rates of 12.7%, but only a small percentage of smokers (∼1.2%) utilize them.6,11 By contrast, more intensive approaches, such as individual or group smoking cessation counseling, are more effective.

So, how does a community NRT program work? In a local NRT program, participants meet with a trained counselor and go through a series of counseling sessions to help them develop a strong, lifelong smoking cessation program. The counselor encourages participants to develop an individualized program that meets their specific needs and demands. Participants then receive medication to help them overcome nicotine addiction and counseling sessions to strengthen their newly formed quit smoking program.

Although the treatment in a community NRT program is very similar to that used in nicotine replacement therapy (like those available through the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association), there are some important differences. For example, a community treatment will not provide nicotine gums or gum to its participants.

Also, while counseling and therapy are very effective at providing the motivation and will power needed to overcome a smoker’s reliance on cigarettes, they are not as effective when a smoker is not able to put away a pack of cigarettes. By contrast, a NRT program is more closely aligned with the successful smoking cessation program of gum and nicotine patches.
If you live in a remote, rural, or other economically disadvantaged area, an NRT may not be the most effective choice for you. But if you live in a busy metropolitan area, then an NRT could be the ideal smoking cessation program for you. If you’re unable to find a local program in your area, then look online.
